Finding
and Fixing Disk Errors
Also Known as Scan Disk
Sometimes,
as the result of programs that misbehave or some other anomaly, your
computer can lose track of files or parts of a file. These
disconnected bits and pieces occupy valuable space on your hard
disk. You can use Scandisk to check your hard disk, find these
sections, and recover them if they contain valuable lost
information. Otherwise, you can delete them to free space on your
hard disk.
TIP:
Recovered file segments are stored in the disk’s root directory as
.CHK files. Open the file as a text document and see if there’s
anything you want to save...
Before
starting Scan Disk, Turn your Screensaver off.
To turn off the Screensaver, go to my computer, control panel, and
then to display, once in display click on the screensaver tab at the
top. Use the scroll down arrow to choose none, then click on apply,
then okay. Also if your running an anti-virus program you must
disable this also. and anything else that would be running in the
back ground. Another good way to run Scandisk or Disk Defrag would
be to run it in safe mode. If you have never put your computer into
safe mode and would like to find out how to do this click
here.
